'  itemprop=\"text\" ><h2>Meta communication<\/h2>\n<p>During the debate, Trump never let Biden finish.\u00a0Biden did not have a good strategy on how to deal with this, while all this was quite predictable.\u00a0He would have done better to mention this.\u00a0Earlier we wrote about\u00a0meta-communication in important debates and discussions.\u00a0Metacommunication:\u00a0<em><strong>identify what is happening.\u00a0But also show why that is so bad.\u00a0<\/strong><\/em>For example, Biden could have consistently positioned himself as an ambassador for ordinary Americans.\u00a0Then Trump doesn\u2019t ignore Biden, but them.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/section><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><!-- close content main div --><\/div><\/div><div id='av_section_4'  class='avia-section main_color avia-section-default avia-no-border-styling  avia-bg-style-scroll  avia-builder-el-12  el_after_av_section  el_before_av_section   container_wrap sidebar_right' style=' '  ><div class='container' ><div class='template-page content  av-content-small alpha units'><div class='post-entry post-entry-type-page post-entry-480'><div class='entry-content-wrapper clearfix'>\n<section class=\"av_textblock_section \"  itemscope=\"itemscope\" itemtype=\"https:\/\/schema.org\/BlogPosting\" itemprop=\"blogPost\" ><div class='avia_textblock  '   itemprop=\"text\" ><h2>Make the impact clear<\/h2>\n<p>In everyday situations with a talking colleague, it does not hurt to also mention what is happening.\u00a0In those situations, too, you should not just stop at meta-communication.\u00a0Even then you must indicate the\u00a0<em>impact of<\/em>\u00a0this.\u00a0That impact does vary from situation to situation.\u00a0For example, it makes a big difference whether this takes place in a one on one situation or in a meeting.<\/p>\n<p>In a meeting, it can be useful to make a\u00a0quarter turn\u00a0and to name the impact on the meeting and the time of your colleagues.\u00a0You do not only stand up for yourself, but for all colleagues.\u00a0(This is\u00a0a good negotiation technique\u00a0anyway\u00a0.)<\/p>\n<p>In a one-on-one situation, the reflex after naming what is happening is to immediately start talking about how it feels to you. That seems like a logical strategy, but what do you achieve with it? The type of colleague who is always talking through you will likely be a lot less empathetic by nature. \u2018Fascinating\u2019 It is also much more effective to think about the WIIFY (what\u2019s in it for you) of the other. For example, by indicating that if the other lets you finish, from now on you can also listen better to the other (ego).
